On Thursday 1 March 2012 at 7.30pm two award-winning South African singers, Njabulo Madlala and Pumeza Matshikiza, will perform opera and contemporary and African songs at St James’s Piccadilly, London to raise awareness for FoodBank South Africa.
FoodBank South Africa , launched in 2009, is a not for profit company which operates independently on private sector lines but has won government recognition as the national food banking network
FoodBank currently feeds 35,000 disadvantaged people per day at an average cost of 12 pence per meal using food otherwise destined for landfill which is donated by many of South Africa’s major food companies. Food is distributed to 1,200 agencies located in seven major cities.
In rural areas FoodBank works with other NGOs to provide education and training for small farmers whose crops can be consumed or sold to create a sustainable model.
FoodBank’s annual budget is approximately £1.4million. Funded by donations and government support it is working to become more sustainable.
FoodBank’s vision is a ‘A South Africa without hunger and malnutrition’.
Tickets are priced at £15, £20 and £25. All tickets are unreserved and include a drink during the interval
